Gambit

When I was 8 or 9, my grandfather taught me to play chess. I understood the functions of the pieces, but the game never suited. I spent years thinking that I didn't have the head for it, and that always left me feeling vaguely inadequate.

After watching The Queen's Gambit, though, I finally realised the problem wasn't me, it was the game.

I don't like chess because it's too mechanical. There is nothing organic about playing chess. There are only so many moves. Nothing is unpredictable. There is no chance. It's a game of memorising lists of moves and countermoves.
