The art of gift-giving is just that, an art. There are some who choose the right gifts flawlessly. It's natural for them to do so. There are others who have to put more thought into choosing, but what they choose is no less perfect. There are those who give what you like, but you know there was no thought put to it. Mind you, there's nothing wrong with that at all. They did, after all, choose something they knew you'd like. Then there are those whose sense of gifting is about as thoughtful as giving Godiva chocolate to a diabetic.
