As a non-American, there are times when I come across spelling usages of theirs that just don't jive with my personal sense of the order of the universe. One of them is the word "donut". Perhaps it is unpalatable to put an "ugh" in your food, but no doughnut is complete without ugh. Without ugh, you see, that word is a command to an action that I find intimately distasteful. I won't say what outright, but just split "donut" into two perfectly innocent English words and you'll get an inkling. On second thought, maybe that's where the ugh came from.
