Consider using an old children's board book as a base for your junk journal or scrapbook.
You can choose to leave the cover and pages as they are and add your items directly on them, cover the pages completely using gesso so nothing underneath can be seen, or cover them thinly so that you can still see some evidence of what's on the page - like vestiges of ghost signs in an old downtown.
You will need:
- a board book
- gesso
- brushes
Do:
- Make sure all the pages are clean of any material not part of the book, this includes the cover.
- If they're glossy pages, sand them lightly to help the gesso adhere better.
- Cover each page with a thin layer of gesso and let it dry. You’ll have to do this one page at a time and let each dry before proceeding with the next. It could be time consuming.
- Repeat the above step until each page is as covered or revealing as you wish.
- You could also use whole sheet sticker paper, such as you'd use in an inkjet printer, to cover the pages. This would protect the pages and make them somewhat sturdier.
Notes:
- If you want to preserve the pages as they were but still reinforce them or prime them, you can use clear gesso instead of white.
- If the book's spine is weak or damaged, reinforce it with a heavy tape (which you can get decorative or colourful versions of) or fabric. Apply the heavy tape to the spine area carefully, or use adhesive and wrap the fabric around it for increased durability.
- You can choose to cover the cover or leave it as it is.
