You will need:
- a jar - consider one that's got patterns on the glass to add some interest
- various papers - white, coloured, patterned on one side and plain on the other, etc.
- writing implements of choice
- large label or sticker
- fabric piece
- string, yarn, or elastic
- colouring or art supplies (optional)
- address labels (optional)
Do:
- Thoroughly clean the jar, including the lid, making sure all old labelling and glue is removed.
- Cut your chosen papers into small pieces, large enough to write prompts on though.
- Write your prompts onto the papers and fold each of them in half to put into the jar.
- Cut a piece of fabric into a size large enough to cover the jar lid, and fix it in place around the jar with ribbon, elastic, string, etc.
- You could also use sticky paper cut to the size of the jar lid top to cover the product labelling. This would allow you an easy place to name the gift if you choose not to use a side label.
Notes:
- You could certainly choose papers that are applicable to each prompt so that the decoration on the outside reflects what's on the inside, or a colour, or just keep it simple.
- You could use paper that has a peel-off sticky back - like address labels - so that when the person you give the jar to can affix the prompt to the top of a page in their journal.
- You might want to use a printer to print the papers or address label prompts out to make sure they're easy to read.
- If you have trouble coming up with prompts or project ideas, there are a multitude of sources online that can help you.
- You could add questions, quotations, song lyrics, project ideas, self-care ideas, local adventure ideas, etc.
- If gifting a journal jar, you might want to include a matching notebook and pen with your gift.
Ideas:
Here are some other things you could do with a gift jar.
- Recipe jar: include the ingredients for the person's favourite dish, as well as the recipe for it - perhaps a version they've never tried before. This works well with cookies!
- Date jar: a nice idea for newlyweds, you could fill the jar with ideas of things for them to do together as a couple, or things they could do for each other.
- Art/Craft jar: fill the jar with the necessary tools for a craft project, as well as the instructions to complete it.
