If you're one to make margin notes or highlight when you read, but you're borrowing a book and still want to keep notes or save quotations, why not do something a bit more with bookmarks themselves?
Create the bookmarks in a manner that suits you - decorated or plain card - and as you read, keep your notes on the bookmarks themselves. When you fill them up, start another.
If you're one to keep a book or reading journal, you can include your bookmarks in it by hinge-taping them on the appropriate page. This will allow you to read both sides.
