Resolutions

As is so prevalent at this time, I too am thinking about the time-honoured tradition of New Year's resolutions. I never make the damned things. Why? Because I've got no stamina, and I can never think of anything to be resolute about.

It, like so very many of our traditions, dates back a very long way, and apparently stems from the desire to start the new year with a clean slate by folks making certain that they cleared all their financial debts. Our desire now, then, is more to start the new year with a clean personal slate.

There are so many rituals which we use to feel that we are attempting a cleansing. Many folk like to take things and burn them: old letters, photos, etc., things that are reminders of an unwelcome past existence. Every once in a rare while I go on this fit of apologising to everyone against whom I've committed a slight. After I'm done I feel pretty good about myself. Not clean exactly, but more that some old baggage is now sloughed off, and I can go on with a more honest desire to improve myself. I think "fresher" is a better adjective than "cleaner".

I suppose I do actually make resolutions, but none at the traditional times. I make small ones to myself all the time. Most never get carried out, but I keep doing it in hopes that one day I'll actually see one through and get that all-important mythical element of accomplishment in my life.

So, what are you lot going to be resolute about this year? Any New Year's resolutions you're going to make and actually make a concerted effort to see through to the finish?
