Every day you leave your home, rushing past everything without a side glance, without a backward glance, without noticing.
Did you notice the gorgeous green paint on that car down the street? That lone bloom on the bush in the yard across the street? The way the cracks in that pavement look just like lightning? The way that shadow looks like the breast and thigh of a voluptuous lady? The way those leaves form a nearly perfect star? The way the reflection in that van's side window makes all the buildings look like melting rubber? The shading from russet to orange of the brickwork on that storefront?
Today you should look at whatever you pass. Look at it. Watch the way that woman walks. Watch the way that puddle dries. Watch the way that ivy climbs the walls of that house. Watch the elongation of shadows. Watch the way snow makes of everything a bowl of icing sugar. Watch the way rain slinks along the window panes. Watch the way that lady picks fruit from the bins.
Listen to the way your feet crunch through the snow. Listen to the way a car's tires sound scruffing over the street. Listen to the way that group of friends laugh with each other as they go out for an evening of frivolity. Listen to the slow swishing sound of a closing door. Listen to the way a key clicks the tumblers of a lock. Listen to the whir as a compact disc readies for play. Listen to the hum of all the appliances in your home, then turn them off one by one, and listen to how peace descends.
