How proud we were as children to bring mother a bouquet of butter flowers. We thought them flowers. Everyone else called them weeds. Then, years later, we find out that you can actually eat dandelions leaves; and the huge ewww that ensued right after.
You could tell if someone liked butter, by holding the flower under your chin; if it glowed, if you could see the reflection in your perfect child skin, then you loved butter.
And then came the phenomena of eating honeysuckle flowers.
Stylised daisies were everywhere; on our toys, clothes, the television. I had a dress with daisies sewn on. It was my "party dress". Every little girl in the 70s had a party dress.
I am reminiscing over lemon twist toys, wooden clogs, Pop Rocks candy, satin jackets, and China flat shoes. I still want a pair of China flats.
To myself I'm singing songs from Schoolhouse Rock, and wondering if I could finally manage to skip some double-dutch. I never could, then.
My poster of Linda Carter as Wonder Woman is long gone, but I've still got my Sean Cassidy tape.
