Do things not have value except in monetary terms anymore?
Peppering my grandmother's conversations are constant reminders of how much she paid for something, or, in the case of her subsidised medication, how much she didn't have to pay for it. She never seems pleased to simply have got a bargain, or something she needed - it's all related to money.
Given her age and the fact that she lived during the depression and WWII, when times were tough and money wasn't anywhere near plentiful (or anywhere near in any way except inside the imagination), I can understand why the dollar value of an item is somehow significant to her. It still annoys me having to hear it all the time, but I understand it.
I'm repulsed by everything being reduced to dollars and lack of sense. It seems, for lack of a better term, cheap, and sometimes even soulless. Unfortunately, it's not something that's going to go away seeing as how the barter system doesn't work in grocery stores and doctor's offices - not anymore, anyhow.
