There is more truth than some might realise to the theory that in writing less there is more, that one should make every word count, that if the word does not need to be there it shouldn't be there. If your writing is obtuse, confused, contrived, your readers aren't going to understand you. And that, in most cases at least, is the entire point - to have someone else understand you. There is no shame in using plain speech, imaginative speech, more well-chosen or crafted speech, rather than, as Orwell thought, being lazy and turning to already concocted turns of phrase.
