When someone says their home isn't suitable for company, it's rarely got anything to do with what the outsider would think of the place. It smacks of unconscious arrogance to reply that "you don't mind" how the place looks, and it also makes the homeowner even more uncomfortable. Frankly, I don't give a rat's ass what the outside party finds acceptable; the issue is what I find acceptable, and the continuation of being put on the spot is extremely uncomfortable. So if someone's uncomfortable with having you in, take it at face value and leave the matter be.
