My love affair with trains began at a very young age. I couldn't say what it was - the power of the machines, even the smell of creosote which I still love - but they've always felt like home to me, likely due to how much time I've spent traveling by rail. When I was a child of 12, I didn't ask for Barbie dolls for gifts, I begged for an electric train set, and got it. In true Canadian fashion, one of the cars on the train was a log car, that came with wee plastic logs.
But I digress...
Steam engines fascinate a lot of people, perhaps it's the romance of a bygone era, or the beauty of well-crafted machinery. CPR recently brought back to life a little of the old days, with a cross-Canada trip on The Empress.
So, I did a little "trainspotting" today. I went down the street to what is, in my opinion, a more than fantastic vantage point, and watched The Empress come by - complete with whistle and a face full of smoke. It put me in an amazingly good mood.
Very many thanks to my friend Pete for letting me know it was coming by.
