There are very few things on this earth that have the power to remain powerful no matter how often I see them - one of those things is Niagara Falls. Millions of gallons of water spilling over the lip every hour, and it looks so small from the observation walks. I wonder what it looks like from the boat that takes you right up to the falling water itself? I've never managed to be on time for that. The Maid of the Mist sails without me yet again, but some day I'll manage it.
During the day the falls grace us with their size, their power, and one wonders what the area looked like without civilisation built up around it. One wonders how many thousands of gallons of water there are in the spray the falls throw up when they hit the pool below. At night the Canadian side of the border shines coloured lights on both nations' water, making displays of rainbows and nationalistic pride. It's really quite lovely. I wonder what it looks like from the air above at night.
Tourists, honeymooning couples, and teenagers with their first thrill of freedom all crowd the embarassment that is the main drag of Niagara Falls, but that's the way it's supposed to be. Flashing lights, funhouses, and overpriced souvenirs. It's just a lot of silly fun.
