Coming back

I've never given much thought to what I'd want to come back as if I were to come back as anything at all, mainly because reincarnation is a thing that requires a type of belief and faith system that I am not a member of.

It'd be nice, in some way, to think of ourselves as somewhat immortal, even if it is only in the samsara sense, because living is something we do so well that we don't want to think of doing without it. We don't want to think that when death takes us, we will somehow be so "gone" that even our names are forgotten by all and sundry.

Common man's lore tells you that in the faiths of others you come back in a lower form if you've been a bad person, or you come back in a form more suited to teaching you the lesson that you need to learn in order to either not come back at all, or to come back in some higher-level form with fewer lessons to learn, and a shorter road to whatever nirvana is up for grabs in your world.

Given that, given the idea that you might come back as an animal, plant, or something else entirely, I've never been able to come up with a desire to come back as anything but human. I just don't relate too well to any other animal form. My favourite animals are humans, my fantasies all revolve around humans, and I find humans the most fascinating creatures out of the entire animal kingdom. We are the only animals that strive to be other than we are, and the only ones who even can. Despite how good or bad this may be, I'd want for nothing other than for what I am - two-legged, upright, and possessed of the gift of lingual gab.
