I was remembering the old five and dimes, as my grandmother would call them, and the sort of lunch counters one found in department stores before they all started incorporating McRaunchy and Starblech's. All this incorporation removes any sort of charm, but that's a story for another day.
The thing I most remember from those places were the rows of pre-made sandwiches, and the bowls of vari-coloured Jello, all topped with whipped cream (the jello, not the sandwiches). Out of all the things I could remember, it's that, the dishes of Jello.
As I mused on the above and read Naked Lunch at the bus stop today, just as I get to the part where someone shouts, "Step out from behind that strap-on, Lee!", an indefinable and loud humming bursts forth from the house across the street. I laughed.
