The subject of excommunication came up at the pub tonight whilst I was waiting for my takeout. The subject of Key Lime Pie also came up, but that hasn't quite the same bearing upon the state of the soul - or does it? There are a number of criteria that one can make use of in order to become excommunicated from the Catholic church - several of which are precluded me because I am not a priest, nor am I about to assist any priest in violating his vows.
The Catholic church really doesn't want to let you go, and will do everything they can to keep you - but I do not think that a large screen television is anything you can ask for from the Pope in order for them not to keep you on from cradle to grave - whether you want to be kept or not.
