I went to a karate tournament today which - besides rekindling my desire to take up Tai Chi again - left me stunned.
One rarely sees that level of intensity in anything anymore, and this intensity was coming out of children. I kid you not, some of the 8 year-olds in my friend's daughter's division had way more presence and intensity than the adults who used the ring after they were done. These munchkins <owned the ring when they entered ii.
I told my friend to nunchuk me and throw me in a ditch after watching some of the 13/14 year-olds black belts do their weapons and kata routines. I have never been able to do the splits, and these kids make it all look so effortless and easy. Felt like a Maxell tape ad with the noise that some of those kids let out with their kiais.
Addendum:
The tournament was held in the same convention hall I had my high school graduation dinner dance in, so while I was witnessing a room full of teeny children who could wipe the floor with me, I was also reminiscing about, o/~ The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire, we don't need no water let the motherfucker burn o/~ Outside of the colour of my dress, the name of my date, and the fact that my pantyhose ran, that's the only memory I have from that night.
