The sterile word

It always throws me off a bit when I communicate with people from Nordic countries about childfreeness. They use the words sterile or sterility even when they're talking about voluntary sterilisation such as I've had. Here, at least in my experience, sterility is only a word one uses when that condition is involuntary, usually for a medical reason. I've never heard a North American ever refer to themselves as sterile if it was voluntary. And, more specifically, I don't think I've ever heard a woman use that term either. It's a word that's usually used by or about men only.
