B roll - 2024 08

For a while, after I deleted my Twitter account and before I started using my Bluesky account instead, I was keeping my bits and pieces on my Tumblr, which I also no longer use. These are those bits and pieces.

02 - Three things I've lost in the past week or so: a roll of paper towels I bought at Dollarama, a headband that fell out of my dojo bag, and the band aid that fell off my arm that was covered where I got blood drawn.

02 - Why aren't there lemon or sour apple popsickles/freezies?

03 - I will immediately scroll past any journalling or scrapbooking video that starts with someone tapping their nails on their book. I fucking hate that. It's irritating.

03 - "If I could write all their names on my body, my skin would drown in ink." - Farah Qadan

06 - If you move from one nation to another, you're not an expat - you're an immigrant.

06 - I heard that you're not actually supposed to rinse your mouth out after you brush your teeth because it washes the fluoride out that's supposed to toughen the teeth up. That just feels so ... pasty.

07 - I feel like 18 C should not feel cold.

07 - Why do people think the only time a political party releases a platform is when they're gearing up for an election. Parties have mandates, platforms, policies, and values all the time. If they don't have something like that right up front, then that's a problem.

07 - How come tarps are orange or blue?

07 - I wish people would not assume that the default no-orange-juice option for orange juice drinkers is apple juice. I hate apple juice. But here I am, possessed of apple juice. Ugh.

07 - Just for giggles, even though I don't need to look for work, I poked around the usual sites I was looking at during my job hunt prior to June last year. If I thought it was bad then, it's much worse now. The temp/staffing sites had nothing either. It's a wasteland out there.

08 - I find anything stock market-related named Poor a bit ... questionable.

08 - The Canadian government, once again, puts us squarely on the wrong side of history by refusing to attend the memorial service in Nagasaki - because the organisers there didn't invite (specifically in this case) Israel. Although they also didn't invite Russia or Belarus. I'm stuck with a bunch of shameful cunts for leadership.

08 - During the next federal election cycle, that's three things now I can list off for any campaigning Liberals I encounter in the wild as to why they won't get a vote out of me. Not that they ever would have anyhow.

09 - Why do we throw parties? English is weird.

09 - There's an audio floating around TikTok of some young dude in a slightly mocking (then laughing) tone talking about how every 20-something girl has a kindergarten craft box in her closet. I think men would be better off if they had them too.

09 - I know it took me a while, but I finally got around to watching Taxi Driver. That sure was some over-the-top acting during the shooting scenes.

11 - I'd love a body wash that smells like sour apple.

11 - Why are people using "did" as a past tense of completion instead of "done"? It's deeply obnoxious. "I had my hair did." vs "I had my hair done."

11 - If I said I enjoyed the mouthfeel of cheap store brand pudding, would that sound worse than it really is?

11 - Things women would rather do than date anyone who calls themselves a he-man or alpha: bread tag collecting, picking hardened glue off old jars, cleaning the toilet, collecting printouts of test patterns.

11 - They are dividing the body parts up into 70 kg portions to give every family at least something to mourn because they can't identify the people.

12 - I used to worry about keeping in touch with certain people - but then I realised that certain life and world events are a blessing because they help to relieve you of the burden of ever having to know them again.

12 - I see Indeed no longer allows you to block certain job categories or employers from showing up in your job feed. That's obnoxious.

12 - I don't enjoy watching post-Tom Baker Doctor Who.

12 - When I was young I used to think clandestine meant casual.

18 - The nice thing about '70s/'80s cop drama is that if you need some background bingey noise, these are perfect. With such long seasons it could take weeks to go through an entire TV series.

19 - Please stop pluralising the word furniture. Thank you.

19 - When I was little and my grandmother and I used to take the train to Cape Breton every summer (which is an overnight situation), I'd wake up each morning to find a little package left by the train porters that had a colouring book, some other activities, and a little cardboard train you could fold and make up. It was one of my favourite parts of the trip along with the (then seeming) cavernous Montreal train station.

19 - If I can't walk to the corner store to get milk in under 10 minutes, then it's not a functional neighbourhood and I don't want to live in it.

19 - "The liberal uses the radical's language to achieve the conservative's aim." - Manning Marable

20 - The only people who keep talking about how they shouldn't talk about politics in mixed company are people that don't know how to talk about politics, or listen to others talk about it.

20 - I was playing that Waffle word game and learned a new word: chamfer.

20 - I think one of the things that would keep me out of a professional career in ballet would have been the proliferation of the colour pink. I hate pink. Also, I hate public performance. Also, I haven't taken a ballet lesson since I was 14.

20 - I regret never having gone to a rave.

21 - Not 15 minutes ago, around 6:15 AM, I heard the building owner in the hallway with another person. They don't live on site. One wonders what the ups is with that.

21 - My favourite Bond girl name is still Chew Mee.

21 - It's almost 9 PM, and I just mopped my bathroom floor. I really know how to live.

24 - The word heist sounds like a sausage.

24 - I just calculated my height in length of Subway sandwiches - just under five and a half full sandwiches tall. Sometimes I sure feel like I'm missing half a sandwich.

24 - Not that I want to run or own a business, I don't. But I had this sudden urge to buy a disused motel and turn it into long-term rental studio apartments.

27 - I just rickrolled myself.

28 - I just found out that a lovely young man who'd been doing what he could to plant food around the tents in Gaza was killed by the evil that occupies Palestine. He was a lovely soul, and worked his ass off to help others. Another light gone from the world.

28 - I like those tiny little cheese nugget things that look like hamster food that are in a box of Chex mix.

28 - I'm not sure what to make of people who won't make a small sacrifice of convenience for a cause, for something moral. It's disappointing.

30 - Here's a conundrum. If I EMT myself a lesser amount of money, like $100 or something, the transfer happens almost right away. But if I do a larger amount, say $1000, the transfer can take a couple of hours. Why.

30 - Last night I microwaved some random chicken in a bowl meal and was just finishing it when I got the notification that my Skip The Dishes order was about to arrive. I ordered food in and completely forgot about it. Oh well. Nothing says breakfast like leftover Vietnamese bun.

30 - There's a whole whack of Shockwave or Flash games I'd love to have back. But they never got ported, so they've disappeared into the ether - Squareoff Gold, Candy Train, Alchemy, and a few others I don't remember the names of.

30 - I wish I could remember how I got exposed to Doctor Who, what I thought of it, what story was the first I saw. My first Doctor was Jon Pertwee, but my favourite is Tom Baker. I've been watching it since I was 8 or 9 years old.
