Here's my orange shirt for Orange Shirt Day (National Day of Truth and Reconciliation), that I designed and made myself. It's not as tidy as I wanted, and not quite the design I wanted. I didn't get the time I wanted to work on it, but I'll do another for next year that includes the thing I had to leave out this time.
Wab Kinew, born in the Onigaming First Nation in Ontario, is the premier of Manitoba. This is a quote from him that I heard some months back that stuck with me.
When many indigenous children were sent to residential schools, one of the things that happened to them was their hair was cut off - a gross form of control and abuse on many levels. Hair is very important to the indigenous people of Canada, and they should be able to wear it long as they traditionally would, without stigma, without shame, and with the pride they deserve.
