Poverty

This is a comment from my text message archives I left elsenet on that I thought I'd make more widely seeable. 2025 06 17: Someone had asked how disabled people on assistance coped with the poverty of such a life.

You don't. You go hungry a lot. You become houseless a lot. When you do become houseless, you lose near half your benefit. You go without, a lot.

Sometimes that means no laundry. It also means no winter boots sometimes. It means women wondering where they're going to get hygiene products from. It means choosing between soap, toothpaste, or food. It means you can't afford the grooming required to look presentable for a job, like haircuts or makeup. It means if you can't walk to it, you can't go there.

It means depending on the deep inadequacy of food banks, which means negative impacts on your health from eating poorer quality food, which means worsening disability for many, which makes the whole thing that much harder to contend with.

It means not being able to get gifts for loved ones on special occasions, and not being able to attend events.

This country loathes disabled people. Showing it so readily we've even gotten more than one slap on the wrist for violating the rights of the disabled from the UNHRC.
