I acquired a method of (so I'm told) contacting MPs directly that bypasses their office and goes straight to them. I took advantage of that to contact the Prime Minister regarding some topics of significance, import, or interest.
Greetings, Prime Minister Carney.
Congratulations on your win.
you're the Liberal Party leader now, and the party you head won enough of a vote share to be offered the role of forming government. None of us are surprised by this. None of us are surprised by Trudeau not pushing for electoral reform that he ran on either.
Here's the thing.
We need electoral reform. We need it yesterday.
Sure, First Past the Post overwhelmingly supports the Liberal and Conservative parties, so I'm sure neither of you is keen on letting that go. But that system does not reflect the people's views, needs, and desires. People end up voting for parties they don't want to, simply to (they think) keep a party they like even less from winning a seat or forming government. This system doesn't reflect the will of the people. A lot of people don't think ranked ballot does either, that it is little better than a beefed up FPTP. The favoured method is a mixed member form of proportional representation.
No one thinks that getting us there won't take money and work, but it's money and work that needs to be done so we can provide a future for this country that reflects the will of the people and doesn't sink us even further into a disastrous two-party system that serves no one but neoliberals, corporations, and potential austerity authoritarians. I'm presuming, part of the reason you took on the mantle of running the Liberal party and becoming PM was to avert the disastrous impacts of actions of the folks living in the apartment below us, which include becoming more like them. Why do that, sir, and then not go all the way with it?
I'm under no illusions about the nature of the Liberal and Conservative parties. you're both capitalists. In fact, all the parties holding seats in the HoC were and are. It is not in your interests as either of those things to open the door to undermining your own power. But this isn't just about you or the Liberal party. There are millions of people who are neither that you are now responsible for. Do right by them. Give us MM/PR. (*)
* And while you're at it, make election day a holiday, do it party style as the Aussies do, make sure that people know they can vote at a returning office any time until close of business the day before the election (most folks have no idea this is possible), and require that all returning offices and polling stations are accessible by public transit (if available).
