Cult of Triviality

It's a thought that's poked at my consciousness now and then for years, but only just today has it decided to be more than a ship that passed in the night.

There's an episode of the original Star Trek where this machine, who thinks Kirk is its creator, does any number of harmful things to ship and crew, including sucking Uhura's memory out. Now, she can still speak after this, you see. She speaks Swahili. Previous to this we're given to believe that she's lost everything that made her who she was. So, what's the implication? The implication is that Swahili is not a language of humanity, or that it's beneath notice, or something along those lines. If all her memory was truly sucked out, so should her ability to speak Swahili have been.

I am reminded of an Australian friend of mine, who is about six or seven years older than myself, who, when she was in school, was being taught that the Aborigines had no culture. There's no need to explain the implications of that one.

we're still doing it, trivialising or ignoring the cultures of others. It's revolting.
